There is much rumour and heresy in the field of search engine optimisation. In part this is caused by marketers who seek to mystify the task of optimising a website, but also by the fact that Google never actually publishes the full details of their ranking methodology.

In addition, web technology changes over time affecting how websites are structured. Heuristic analysis of content improves with processing power. And of course the abuse of cross linking and keywords by website owners in the past has lead search engines to take a far broader and more complex view of our web content than we can ever hope to control.

There is one document that matters and is attached to this post - The Google SEO Starter Guide - Download and read it.

It contains guidelines for writing, formatting and linking content, as well as suggestions about how you improve the indexing of your website. Above all, nothing beats the value of relevant content written in plain English on your website.

Another very helpful resource for answering SEO-related questions is the Google Webmaster Help YouTube channel.

What currently matters in search engine optimisation - SEO:

* Page Rank indicates the relevance of your website in relation to other sites with siliar content
* Links from other relevant sites to yours increases your Page Rank
* High Page Rank does not equal high traffic
* High traffic does not equal relevant traffic
* Actual written and visible page content is of the highest importance
* Use of heading tags H1, H2, H3 indicates what is important in your written content
* The site Description Meta tag will be published visibly in the Google search results - Make it relevant
* Keyword Meta data has no bearing on page rank or indexing
* Do not make use of irrelevant link directories
* Do not make ad-hoc changes to the basic structure and heading content of your site
* Businesses should be registered and verified with Google Maps Local
