The Raumati Programme

Chelsea House follows Te Whaariki, the New Zealand early childhood education curriculum, which is founded on the following aspirations for children:

• to grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators
• healthy in mind, body and spirit
• secure in their sense of belonging, and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society.

At Chelsea House, our qualified teachers design programmes which are stimulating, exciting and offer plenty of variety to meet each child’s learning style. On a daily basis, children can enjoy a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Activity areas are set up to allow for noisy play as well as some peace and quiet!

Every day, these choices are freely available:

• Art
• Modelling with dough and clay
• Building and construction
• Dramatic play - dress ups, housekeeping
• Computer technology
• Manipulation activities like puzzles
• Reading and story telling
• Exploration and experimentation with maths and    science
• Outdoor play with large toys, sandpit, water, swings, slides and climbing apparatus

From time to time, older children are taken on excursions which introduce them to places beyond their immediate community.
Our high adult to child ratios exceed the minimum requirements of the Ministry of Education because we know that the more individual care a child receives in those early years, the better prepared they are for the future. We also recognise that very young children require a lot more individual attention which is why we have a ratio of one adult to three infants aged 12 months or less.

Recording your child’s progress is an essential element of our programme. Our teachers make very regular observations of your child and these are recorded in a profile book – which is beautifully prepared in a way that makes it a keepsake of your child’s time at Chelsea House. The children love to look at these books too and recall their experiences. We also provide a formal report to parents twice a year and we meet with parents to keep you informed of your child’s progress.
