Raumati Centre Tales 'n Yarns
Matariki at Te Papa
Recently the children of Room 5 went to Te Papa to learn about Matariki, the Maori New Year.
They set off in the morning heading for Wellington to meet our story teller Bianca at Story Time in Te Papa. When we arrived we took our shoes off and sat around a campfire while Bianca read us a story about how Matariki is a star formation of seven stars that is also known as Pleiades.
After our story we ventured into the forest to see the stars and when the sun came up we were able to go fishing off the bridge. We also saw lots of Native birds such as Kakapo, Tui, Pukeko and Owls.
When we had tidied up we sat in the dark, on the woven mat and watched the stars of Matariki
twinkle above us, while Bianca read us one more story.
